Probably many of you will agree that it’s hard to understand how difficult it actually is to be a stay-at-home mom until you become one. It may seem that not going to work, not having tasks that need to be submitted to the boss on deadline is easy, but most of us forget that being a mom is 24/7 and includes many different tasks.
This stay-at-home mom’s video recently went viral after she shared that her husband told her that she’s lucky she doesn’t need to go to work and she decided to take a ‘day off’.

Being a stay-at-home mom includes many responsibilities that may seem easy until you actually need to do it every day
This woman shared a video showing what her house looks like after she decided to take a ‘day off’ from being a stay-at-home mom
“So let me just start by saying, we are new to this, me staying home with the kids and not having my career anymore, which is great”
“Although my husband loves me, he did slip up yesterday. We were at Sunday fun day having some drinks and he says to me, ‘well, at least you don’t have to go to work tomorrow.’”
“And I said ‘Oh, I don’t. Okay, good to know.’”
“So, mama didn’t work today. I didn’t do the dishes. I didn’t clean up. I didn’t pick up the kids’ rooms. I didn’t put the laundry away. I didn’t do a little laundry. I didn’t clean the dishes from the five meals I’ve already made and I haven’t changed out of my pajamas. So, Happy Monday”
The creator of the viral video is TikTok user @sahm_amateurhour, who is a stay-at-home mom. In the video, the woman shares her recent conversation with her husband and takes viewers around her messy house, showing a bathroom with clothes laying around, and a kitchen with cups and dishes laying in the sink. She continues showing us around the house, where toys are on the floor and some of the kids’ belongings on the sofa.

People in the comments related to the woman and stay-at-home moms shared their personal experiences. “I was a SAHM for 10 years. It was MUCH more difficult than working OTH,” one user shared. “My husband always says ‘well, at least you get to sleep in tomorrow’… I get up with the baby throughout the night and I’m with him all day. When am I sleeping in?” another added.
However, other folks didn’t agree with this woman’s method to ‘teach her husband a lesson’ and discussed that effective communication may have been a much better solution. “It’s great to prove your point, but you’re just gonna still have to clean it the day after,” one person emphasized. “This type of mentality is extremely toxic. It’s really not a competition on who ‘works the hardest,’” another added.
“In my experience, I feel there is definitely a lack of understanding about the challenges of being a stay-at-home mom,” Alessandra Kaminski, who is a motherhood blogger and digital creator, shared with Bored Panda. “I think many people see stay-at-home moms as women who sit and play with their kids all day and do ‘nothing’, or that staying home is a ‘luxury.’”
She added that in reality, SAHMs are doing so much all the time on top of playing with and caring for their children! “It is a 24/7 job, and many people underestimate the physical, emotional, and mental demands of this role,” Alessandra emphasized. ‘There’s also the aspect of juggling tasks and responsibilities constantly!”
We were also interested to hear about the most rewarding aspects of being a stay-at-home mom, and she pointed out being with children all the time and having front-row seats to watch them grow. “You never miss a milestone and you’re able to build strong bonds with your children through quality time spent together,” she added. “I also have the flexibility to do things on my own time, such as playgrounds, museums, have play dates, etc.”
Finally, she shared that she personally has never encountered anyone who made her feel less for being a stay-at-home mom. “I am lucky to have a very supportive husband and family who sees what I do and how much I do and they understand how important it is. But there are definitely other stay-at-home moms who are judged or looked at as not ambitious or even lazy.”
Alessandra also pointed out that there are many misconceptions about stay-at-home moms, but even if they have left the workforce to focus on our family, they know the importance of their jobs and that’s all that really matters!
