Safe stolen from Newcastle city centre pub in suspected burglary overnight

A city centre pub will remains closed following a suspected burglary at the premises overnight.

Staff at The Town Mouse Ale House, on St Mary's Place, said they came into work on Monday morning to find the property had been broken into overnight.

It has reported that a safe, as well as cash, has been stolen from the venue and damage has been caused to the property during the incident. Northumbria Police is carrying out enquiries and is urging anyone who may have information to come forward.

In a statement on social media, The Town Mouse said that it will remain closed today and hopes to reopen tomorrow. It read: "Came in today to find that we've been broken into overnight.

"We won't be open today as I'm trying to sort things out. Hopefully we'll be back tomorrow."

The message was shared to the pub's Twitter and Facebook accounts and was met with a number of well-wishes from customers and local businesses. Crown Posada manager, Andrew Nicholson, wrote: "What awful news, I hope there's not to much damage."

While a number of local pubs offered their support to The Town Mouse. The Mean Eyed Cat pub said: "If there is anything we can do give us a shout." The Free Trade Inn added: "Let us know if there's anything we can help with."

The Town Mouse micropub, which has room for just 50 drinkers, opened in 2017 to help champion North East microbrewers and their unique beers. Today customers also shared their support for the pub following reports of the break-in.

One person wrote: "How terrible. There are some awful people in the world. Hope there isn't too much loss." Another added: "Sorry to hear this, hope there's not too much damage."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Officers are investigating a report of burglary at a premises on St Mary's Place in Newcastle city centre.

"Shortly before 11am today (Monday) it was reported that an offender had gained access to The Town Mouse Ale House overnight where they have caused damage and taken a safe as well as cash before leaving the premises.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and anyone with information can contact police via the 'Tell Us Something' page of our website or by calling 101 quoting crime number 068796U/22."
