Shoppers in Nottingham voiced their sadness after police confirmed the 'sudden death' of a man in the city centre. Nottinghamshire police officers were called to the Cornerhouse in Burton Street at about 2.20am on Sunday, December 18.
A large cordon was put in place around the complex as investigations took place into the incident. It was later confirmed a 31-year-old man had died but the circumstances were not thought to be suspicious.
The incident caused shock among shoppers and workers in the area. Hia Dennison, assistant manager at Tamatanga in Trinity Square, said: “This is sad, that someone died. I’m passing all my best wishes to his family and friends.”

She added: “I was shocked to see such a large police cordon. I wanted to know what’s happened - and this is just really sad.” Steve Brandson, who is 66 and works in the area, added: “I feel sorry for his family. Even if you don’t know the person, it’s just sad when someone dies if they have family.”
Gabriela Neagu, assistant manager at Prezzo, said: “Obviously it’s really sad that someone died. Condolences to the family and friends at this difficult time. “I was worried when I saw the police cordon this morning. Unfortunately, we always see police cordons over the weekend, especially in the morning.”
She added: “It is just very sad.” Investigators were seen going in and out of the Cornerhouse throughout the morning.
Chief Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The man’s family and friends are being supported by specially trained officers at this extremely difficult time. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the man’s death. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The cordon was eventually taken down just before 10am on Sunday. However, the doors to the Cornerhouse remained closed and a sign stated it was not expected to open until about 12noon.
A number of families also started turning up at the site after booking tickets at the Cineworld, located inside the complex. Irusappan Lakshmonah, 33, of Sherwood, said he understood the decision, adding: "We totally understand and we pass on the best wishes to his family and friends. It is a very sad situation. I hope his family are alright.”
