Sadio Mane's Man Utd transfer agreement as Liverpool set price tag for him to leave

Sadio Mane very nearly joined Manchester United before signing for Liverpool.

The Senegal international claims an agreement for the switch from Southampton to Old Trafford was in place before Jurgen Klopp made a phone call and convinced the forward to snub the Red Devils and join him on Merseyside instead.

The decision proved to be the right one for Mane, who has gone on to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in his time at the club. But his days at Liverpool may have come to an end, with claims a price tag has even been set for his sale.

Mane recently recalled the story in an interview with the Daily Telegraph: "I have to say, I was really close to going to Manchester United. I had the contract there. I had it all agreed. It was all ready, but instead, I thought, 'No, I want to go to Liverpool.'

"I was convinced to go with (Jurgen) Klopp's project. I still remember the first time I got the call from Klopp. He said, 'We have a big project at Liverpool and I want you to be part of it.'

"Then he asked what position I wanted because he could see at Southampton I played on the right side and I used to play on the left. I said I prefer left, and then he said, 'But (Philippe) Coutinho is on the left!'

"So I said, never mind, I will play on the right. I could see myself in all the positions."

Liverpool are keen to keep hold of Mane but are currently in a contract stand-off with the Senegalese and his teammate, Mohamed Salah - both of whom are out of contract in the summer of 2023.

Salah has already confirmed he is staying for another season and will leave Liverpool when his contract expires unless he's offered a new bumper deal. Mane on the other hand looks likely to exit this coming transfer window.

Despite Man Utd's previous interest in Mane, Bayern Munich are the favourites for his signature, with club CEO Oliver Kahn and his predecessor Karl-Heinz Rumenigge watching the Reds star in action in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid on Saturday.

Bayern are looking to pay around £25million for Mane, but Liverpool, who are said to be relaxed on the situation despite the fact they could lose the 30-year-old for free next summer, are looking for a higher fee.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool would only consider parting company with Mane this summer if they received a figure in the region of £42.5million.
