Sadio Mane posted a photograph of himself cuddling the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in bed the morning after Senegal’s penalty shootout triumph over Egypt.
It was the Liverpool forward who smashed home the winning spot-kick after a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, a feat which also earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Senegal had never won the AFCON crown, having lost in finals in 2002 and 2019. But that wait was ended in fine style after Edouard Mendy saved Mohanad Lasheen’s penalty, to set up Mane’s big finish.
On Monday morning, Mane posted a series of shots from his hotel room with the trophy alongside him and winners’ medal around his neck, with the caption “Alhamdoulilah” - or ‘Praise be to God’.
Another man celebrating the triumph was Senegal boss Aliou Cisse, who missed in the 2002 shootout but was able to guide his country to victory in Cameroon.
Cisse told reporters: “I am African champion. It was long, it was difficult, sometimes complicated, but we never gave up.
“I dedicate this victory to the Senegalese people. For years, we have been chasing this cup. Today we will be able to put a star on our jersey.
“Winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon has a special meaning. Winning against the most successful team in Africa is another symbol.
“For almost seven years, we have been working. Good job, guys."
