The son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has made debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his dad's old team, the Mumbai Indians.

Arjun Tendulkar is a left-arm seamer and batter and played his first IPL match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium in in Mumbai.

Tendulkar has played a handful of top-flight matches in India and England, scoring a century and taking three wickets in his first-class debut with Goa in December.

In his first match in India's showpiece T20 tournament, the 23-year-old opened the bowling with Australian Cameron Green for the Indians and almost had two wickets in the first over.

His second ball saw Rahmanullah Gurbaz just manage to clear Tim David at mid-on after he toe-ended a full ball, and the fourth was a close LBW call on Narayan Jagadeesan that ball tracking showed would have bounced over the stumps.

Tendulkar only bowled the two overs, the first and third of the match, and finished with 0-17.

He did not get a chance to bat as the Indians comfortably chased down Kolkata's 6-185 inside 18 overs.

"Arjun, today you have taken another important step in your journey as a cricketer," Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.

"As your father, someone who loves you and is passionate about the game, I know you will continue to give the game the respect it deserves and the game will love you back.

"You have worked very hard to reach here, and I am sure you will continue to do so.

"This is the start of a beautiful journey. All the best!"

The Knight Riders' total was spearheaded by Venkatesh Iyer, who smashed nine sixes and six fours as he scored 104 off 51 balls.

Green finished with 1-20 off his two overs, and faced just one delivery in the run chase.
