Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Shami among sporting stars to pay tributes to Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI: Indian sports stalwarts paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.

Known for his visionary leadership, quiet strength, and humility, Singh succumbed to age-related ailments after losing consciousness at his residence.

Dr. Manmohan Singh played a significant role in India’s sporting history, including overseeing the hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi during his second term as Prime Minister. He also inaugurated the 11th National Football League in Kolkata in 2005.

Tributes also poured in from former cricketers Virender Sehwag, V.V.S. Laxman, and ex-women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal, among others.

Before serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Singh was the architect of India’s economic liberalization as Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government.

Renowned for his intellect and grace, he retired from active politics earlier this year, bringing an illustrious three-decade-long career in public service to a close.
