Saatva is the luxury sleep brand behind the number one recommendation in our best mattress of the year guide with its innerspring hybrid the Saatva Classic. But how do the brand's memory foam models compare? The Loom & Leaf was the first all-foam model in the Saatva range, while the newer Contour5 features improved lumbar support and temperature relief — plus $500 extra dollars on the price tag.
This month's best Saatva mattress sale saves you $400 on both mattresses, so which one should you buy? In this Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Contour5 comparison we're exploring the key difference between these two mattresses to help you decide which to buy in this year's Black Friday mattress deals before the sale ends.
Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Saatva Contour5 Mattress: Price & trial
- Saatva consistently runs sales and you can now get $400 off both beds
- Both Saatva mattresses come with a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty
- A queen Loom & Leaf is now $1,995, a queen Contour5 is now $2,595
The best memory foam mattresses are typically more affordable than comparable hybrids, but with the Loom & Leaf and Contour5 Saatva aims to prove all-foam can be luxurious.
The Loom & Leaf is the cheaper of the two mattresses, and one of the most affordable mattresses in the Saatva line-up — although it is still a premium buy. At full MSRP, a queen costs $2,395. The newer, more advanced Contour5 has an MSRP of $2,995 for a queen.
However, Saatva mattress sales occur frequently so if either mattress is full price, it's worth waiting for a deal. For the Loom & Leaf, the best offer is typically $400 off all sizes, a deal which is currently active for a limited time. The current $400 discount is also a good saving on the Contour5, but for the best deal, keep an eye out for 15% off.
You'll get the same benefits with both beds, as Saatva offers a 365-night trial and forever warranty across the adult mattress range. These are excellent extras, and with the extended trial you have a full year to decide if this mattress is right for you. Saatva also offers free white glove delivery with both beds.
Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Saatva Contour5 Mattress: Materials & design
- Both the Loom & Leaf and Contour5 are all-foam mattresses
- Loom & Leaf is 12" tall with 5 layers and a body-hugging foam core
- Contour5 is 12.5" tall with 5 layers and upgraded lumbar support
The Loom & Leaf and Contour5 have several similarities, starting with the basics: they're both all-foam beds from Saatva. Both feature Saatva's dense, body-hugging memory foam core and both have integrated lumbar support. So let's explore the designs in detail.
Starting with the cover. The Loom & Leaf features a hypoallergenic organic cotton cover, quilted with two layers of plush foam and coated with antimicrobial treatment. The cover features additional lumbar zone quilting which, along with the lumbar crown beneath, adds back support.
Beneath this is a layer of contouring cooling foam, followed by the high-density foam core. Together these layers create the classic 'hug' foam feel. The next layer is a transitional foam, available in two firmness levels. Finally, a durable 5.5" foam base brings stability and longevity to the bed.
The Contour5 also uses an organic cotton cover, but this has a smooth design (plus the antimicrobial treatment). Next is a non-toxic flame barrier that covers every side of the mattress. Underneath these initial layers sits the CoolVent System with Lumbar Zone PCM Matrix. Essentially, this layer uses phase change material and zoned support foam to keep the lumbar region more supported and enhance breathability.
This is followed by a layer of contouring gel foam, then the "luxurious" body-hugging core for enhanced pressure relief. A transition layer follows, available in two firmness levels, before the final layer of 6" durable support foam.
Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Saatva Contour5 Mattress: Support & comfort
- Both mattresses are available in a medium-firm and firm feel
- Both excel at motion isolation and pressure relief
- Loom & Leaf has a plush pillow-top, Contour5 superb body contouring
Saatva is known for offering mattresses in different firmness levels and these all-foam models are no exception. The Loom & Leaf is available in Relaxed Firm and Firm, while the Contour 5 is sold as Medium and Firm. From our experience, this translates as medium-firm and firm.
For our Saatva Loom & Leaf Mattress review, our testing panel slept on the Relaxed Firm model. We rated it seven out of 10 on the firmness scale, indicating medium-firm (with 10 being rock hard). Saatva claims the Relaxed Firm suits all sleep styles and our testers agreed, finding the contouring foam to quickly adapt to the body for optimal pressure relief.
However, stomach sleepers, who benefit from a firmer support, should consider the Firm instead. The sumptuous quilted top is luxurious, but might be too soft for those who lie on their front (or back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel).
We tested the medium version of the Contour5 for our Saatva Contour5 Mattress review, but we rated it as a medium-firm (a 6/10 on the firmness scale). We found it comfortable in a range of sleep positions, with even our stomach sleeper enjoying the cradling pressure relief. But if you prefer a sturdier support, opt for the Firm feel.
While the Contour5 yields to the body, this isn't a mattress with excessive sink. The supportive core (plus those upper support layers) ensure neutral spinal alignment to alleviate aches and pains. The Loom & Leaf also performed strongly in this area, earning a place in our top mattress for back pain guide.
Both beds also have excellent motion isolation. Those dense foams absorb motion, so you can share with a restless partner and not wake up to their every movement. However, the edge support was middling in both designs. Disappointing, as we awarded the flagship Saatva Classic 5/5 for edge support in our Saatva Classic mattress review.
Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Saatva Contour5 Mattress: Temperature control
- Loom & Leaf uses gel-infused foams for better temperature regulation
- Contour5 features a layer of phase change material
- Contour5 a better choice for hot sleepers
Memory foam mattresses have a reputation for sleeping hot (the dense foams trap heat) but is that a problem for these premium Saatva beds? The Loom & Leaf does boast several temperature regulating features, but our testers were left disappointed, waking up warm on several occasions. While it isn't as bad as some cheap memory foams, we don't recommend this mattress for hot sleepers.
Contour5 features upgraded temperature regulation, including a layer of phase change material. Our review panel agreed the Contour5 slept a comfortable neutral temperature, and while it's not cool-to-the-touch, there was no overheating issues. However, very hot sleepers might want to consider one of the best cooling mattresses instead.
Saatva Loom & Leaf vs Saatva Contour5 Mattress: which should you buy?
Buy the Saatva Loom & Lead mattress if...
✅ You're on a tighter budget: The Loom & Leaf is still a premium memory foam bed but it is several hundred dollars cheaper than the Contour5 while still delivering body-hugging pressure relief.
✅ You like a plush surface: A sumptuous quilted top gives the Loom & Leaf a pillowy feel when you first lie down. One tester described it as "luxurious", although the thick cushioning won't appeal to everyone.
✅ You want cushioned pain relief: Combining enhanced lumbar support with that plush quilted top, the Loom & Leaf is ideal for those who like a lot of cushioning but need strong support.
Buy the Saatva Contour5 Mattress if...
✅ You sleep hot: One of the highlights of the Contour5 is its upgraded temperature regulation. While softer memory foam mattresses can sleep hot, our tester found this bed maintained a neutral temperature all night.
✅ You prefer a streamlined finish: The waterfall tight-top cover gives the Contour5 a smooth finish, allowing those thick foams beneath to hug the body without any quilting getting in the way.
✅ You have back pain: Both these mattresses feature excellent lumbar support, but the Contour5 just comes out on top. That's because it adds cooling technology to its enhanced lumbar support, so you won't toss and turn from overheating.
