Ryanair cancels 5,000 flights to Lisbon for summer 2022

Ryanair has cancelled 5,000 flights to Lisbon this summer, affecting 900,000 passengers.

The budget airline says it has been forced to cut its aircraft based in Lisbon from seven to four for 2022.

This has resulted in the cancellation of 19 Lisbon routes across the summer.

Ryanair said the cancellations come after they requested the Portuguese government to release unused Tap Air slots.

However, Ryanair has confirmed the three aircraft slots and the lost 19 routes will return to Lisbon in Oct 2022 for Ryanair’s Winter schedule.

Ryanair’s Group CEO, Michael O’Leary said apologised for the cancellations and disruption.

In a strong statement, Mr O'Leary added: "The loss of these 19 Lisbon routes and 5000 flights this summer, means that Lisbon’s post-Covid recovery will now lag behind other major EU capital cities.

"Ryanair remains committed to returning these three aircraft and 19 routes to Lisbon in October for its winter schedule when we will resume driving traffic, tourism and jobs recovery in Lisbon.

"All passengers affected by these summer 2022 cancellations will receive email notifications later this week offering them full refunds or alternative flights to/from Lisbon for summer 2022."

The 19 lost routes in Lisbon for summer 2022:

  • Agadir
  • Alghero
  • Alicante
  • Bari
  • Billund
  • Birmingham
  • Bournemouth
  • Baden-Baden
  • Lanzarote
  • Madrid
  • Malta
  • Memmingen
  • Oujda
  • Palermo
  • Perpignan
  • Poitiers
  • Tenerife
  • Wroclaw
  • Zaragoza

The news comes after Ryanair confirmed it had scrapped all its flights from Liverpool to Ibiza for the 2022 summer season.

The budget airline said that due to a shortage of available slots at Ibiza Airport, its route from Liverpool to the Spanish party island will not operate for summer 2022.

Instead, holidaymakers and party-goers will have to fly from Manchester Airport if they want to get to Ibiza.
