Ryan Tubridy reveals heartbreak behind scenes at RTE as he announces devastating death of Toy Show colleague

Ryan Tubridy has revealed there has been heartbreak behind the scenes at RTE this week as he announced the sad passing of a Toy Show colleague.

Catherine Sorg of Skerries, Co. Dublin, (late of Eguisheim, Alsace France) passed away peacefully on Monday at Beaumont Hospital surrounded by her family.

A member of the design department at RTE, she has been remembered as ‘a wonderful talent’ and ‘cherished colleague’, whilst Late Late Show host Ryan, who she worked with on the annual Toy Show, said she will be sadly missed in a touching tribute.

Speaking on his RTE Radio 1 show on Tuesday morning, following a lengthy tribute to late Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan, who also passed away on Monday, the presenter said: “You know somebody who works very close to the Toy Show died yesterday[Mon].

“And she was a colleague of ours who got sick very quickly.

“And I won’t go into the details until everyone is okay with that, but she was very young also, just like Vicky [Phelan].

“And the point I'm making is that I am thinking of her family today, because there are people who are well known, and people who are not well known, but no less loved, and the story is one that touches families around the country.

“So I just wanted to mention that in passing this morning, because a lot of people are going to miss Catherine.

The 49-year-old went on: “Like I say, I'll talk more about that another time.”

The sad news has come just one week away from the annual Late Late Toy Show, which is due to air on RTE One next Friday, 25 November.

Tributes have flooded in for Catherine after her death was announced on Tuesday.

One said: “The Design Department in RTÉ has lost a wonderful talent, a cherished colleague, a beacon of positive energy and an all round fun loving, shining star. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Deepest sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues. May she rest in peace.”

Another wrote: “My sincere condolences to Catherine’s family on her sad passing. I used to work in RTÉ with Catherine, creating props & art for young people's programmes and she was always a buzz of creativity.

“She was a lovely person and will be sadly missed by her colleagues.”

“Deepest condolences to all of Catherine's family. She was a fabulous colleague to work with,” a third penned.

“Talented and professional, always considerate of others. She will be deeply missed.”

She will be laid to rest on Friday morning at St. Patrick's Church in Skerries.

Her death notice on Rip.ie reads: “Sadly missed by her loving and cherished husband Killian, daughter Elise, mother Renée, brothers François, Jean and Pierre, her goddaughter Odile, mother-in-law Aideen, father-in-law Tony, nieces, nephews, relatives, extended family and a large circle of friends in Ireland and France.

“May Catherine Rest In Peace.

“Reposing at Lannon's Funeral Home Thursday from 6pm to 8pm, removal Friday to St. Patrick's Church, Skerries arriving for 10am funeral mass.

“A private family cremation will take place.”
