Ryan Seacrest confirms Wheel of Fortune role as he takes over from Pat Sajak

Ryan Seacrest has confirmed he is taking over presenting duties on Wheel of Fortune after Pat Sajak announced his retirement earlier this month.

Pat had hosted the show for 40 years, but it's now time for the American Idol host to take over the challenge.

Ryan confirmed the news on his social media on Tuesday.

He wrote: "I'm truly humbled to be stepping into the footsteps of the legendary Pat Sajak. I can say, along with the rest of America, that it's been a privilege and pure joy to watch Pat and Vanna on our television screens for an unprecedented 40 years, making us smile every night and feel right at home with them.

"Pat, I love the way you've always celebrated the contestants and made viewers at home feel at ease. I look forward to learning everything I can from you during this transition."

He continued his lengthy post to share further information on his past roles on gameshows.

He added: "Many people probably don't know this but one of my first jobs was hosting a little game show called "Click" for Merv Griffin 25 years ago so this is truly a full circle moment for me and I'm grateful to Sony for the opportunity."

And he concluded by telling his fans: "I can't wait to continue the tradition of spinning the wheel and working alongside the great Vanna White."

Earlier this month, Pat shocked his loyal fans with the news of his retirement at the end of his 41st year on the show.

It was agreed however that he will stay on as a consultant for three more years.

He also took to social media at the time to make the announcement, telling his Twitter followers: "Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last.

"It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all."

Ryan had freed up time in his busy schedule when he stepped down from his early morning duties on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

He was a part of the show for six years before handing over to former co-host Kelly Ripa's husband, Mark Consuelos.
