Ryan Reynolds has been criticised and called “ignorant” after claiming he and wife Blake Lively had working class upbringings.
The Deadpool actor, 48, has been married to Gossip Girl star Lively, 37, since 2012 and together they share children James, 10, Inez, eight, Betty, five, and one-year-old Olin.
Opening up in a new interview, Reynolds spoke about how they are trying to give their offspring a regular upbringing out of the spotlight, while maintaining their high-profile careers.
'We try to give them as normal a life as possible. I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife’s childhood,” he told The Hollywood Reporter
Adding: “We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, 'Oh God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,' or, 'I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout' or whatever."
His remarks raised eyebrows as while his mum and dad were a retail worker and policeman respectively, Lively - who has previously been called a “nepo baby” - had a far from working class upbringing.
She grew up in an affluent area of Los Angeles with her late father, Ernie Lively, an actor and director, while her mother, Elaine Lively, was an actress and a talent manager.
Fans have accused the Wrexham AFC co-owner of “not knowing working class meaning” after The Cut reposted his quote from THR interview on Instagram.
Taking to the comments section, one person shot back: "Quick search: She grew up in Tarzana and then went to Burbank High. Her whole family was in the entertainment business.
“She was cast in Sisterhood for the Traveling Pants while she was a teen. It’s giving at least middle class. Anyway none of that matters bc she’s rich and insufferable now. Bye."
Another put in: "You keep using that word, 'working class.' I do not think it means what you think it means.'"
"Stop trying to make Relatable Blake happen, it’s NOT going to happen," added a third.
Some also drew comparisons to the viral moment in David and Victoria Beckham’s Netflix docu-series when the Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer tried to claim she was from a working class family. She was swiftly called out by her husband who forced her to admit that her dad drove her to school in a Rolls Royce.
“Honey her sister was already an actress, and ya’ll got married on a plantation. This is giving Posh Spice in the David Beckham documentary. ‘Tell the truth’ lol.” one joked.
“Be honest (david beckham voice),” quipped another.
Lively has experienced a fall from grace following the summer release of her film, It Ends With Us, which was based on the best-selling Colleen Hoover novel of the same name.
She faced relentless speculation about her rumored rift with her on-screen love interest, Justin Baldoni and was accused of “trivialising” domestic violence while promoting the flick about a woman who finds herself in an abusive relationship.
Adding to her woes, Lively was called out for her “mean girl” behaviour and comments in multiple resurfaced interviews over the years, including the use of the transgender slur “tranny” in several unearthed videos.
