Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney net worth and how much they bought Wrexham for

Wrexham could write the latest chapter of their Hollywood fairytale on Tuesday night as they take on Championship promotion contenders Sheffield United in their FA Cup fourth round replay with a clash against Tottenham Hotspur at stake.

The National League side were seconds away from pulling off a giant killing against the Blades just over a week ago having come from behind to lead 3-2 going into the dying moments but a late John Egan equaliser left the 10,000 Wrexham fans inside the Racecourse ground gutted.

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds was one of those inside the stadium and couldn't hide his disappointment at the late cruel twist, having taken over the club in 2021 with friend and fellow actor Rob McElhenney.

The pair have proved big hits with players, fans and the wider community having shown their commitment for the club, often making the trip over from North America to cheer on Phil Parkinson's side as they support the club in their push for promotion.

It's clear that neither man is short for cash, but how much are Reynolds and McElhenney worth exactly? Here's everything you need to know.

How much is Ryan Reynolds worth?

The Canadian actor has a reported net worth of more than £125million, having found success in a number of hit films including Deadpool, The Proposal and Green Lantern. According to Celebrity Net Worth, he took home $22m (£18.3m) from the first Deadpool film and a further $40m (£33.3m) from the sequel alone.

He's not afraid to splash the cash either, having proposed to his Hollywood megastar wife Blake Lively with a bespoke ring that cost a cool £1.6m.

Aside from purchasing Wrexham, Reynolds has other business interests, starting his own production company in 2018 before acquiring stakes in Aviation American Gin and Mint Mobile, which owns around 25 per cent of. Following his success in Wales, he confirmed in November that he was interested in purchasing ownership of the Ottawa Senators hockey club but admitted he needed "a partner with really deep pockets" to complete the deal.

How much is Rob McElhenney worth?

McElhenney is less wealthy than his fellow Wrexham co-owner, but still has plenty in the bank. The 'Always Sunny' star has a reported net worth of around £50 million following his success in the beloved sitcom as well as Apple TV series Mythic Quest.

Like Reynolds, however, he has other business interests and last year announced the launch of a new entertainment-tech company named Adim, co-founded by himself and others. He and his wife - Always Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson - also bought Skinner's Bar in Philadelphia and renamed it Mac's Tavern in homage to his character.

How much did they buy Wrexham AFC for?

The pair completed their takeover of the club in February 2021, sixth months after the club announced that it had been approached by two "extremely well-known individuals of high net worth" who had made an offer to buy it.

Reynolds and McElhenney confirmed that they would be buying the National League club in November 2020 and later took 10% control from the Wrexham Supporters Trust after receiving overwhelming backing for the takeover. They bought the club for around £2 million.

The Hollywood stars have spoken about how they were drawn in by the appeal of an "underdog story", having been struck by the closeness between the local community and the football club in Wrexham.

"It’s always been a dream of mine to be associated in some capacity with a professional sports franchise, (I just never) knew of a rational or legitimate avenue into it," said McElhenney. "Then it was over the pandemic when I started watching a lot more documentaries and started getting into football and then learned about the English system and realized - wait, that’s an interesting way in."

Reynolds also explained how the deal came about, telling The Athletic: "One day Rob sends me an email that outlines his plan to buy a lower-league club and grow it into something more resembling a global force ... I just thought it was so unexpected and so interesting and I love building businesses and this is a business."
