Ryan Mason defends Daniel Levy and reveals Tottenham owner's reaction to nightmare year

Ryan Mason has revealed Daniel Levy has been left crushed by Tottenham's collapse this season.

The under-fire chairman was caught on camera being consoled by his wife as the north Londoners were beaten in their final home game of the season last week by Brentford. "It hurts him," said Mason. "It hurts everyone committed to this club and everyone who really cares and wants his club to be successful."

Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Leeds, Mason added: "One thing I will say is he spent money. He's tried his best and I just think ultimately it's probably been let down by other people. But that’s football. It happens and hopefully we can get things right."

Tottenham's wretched season was capped in midweek by Feyenoord coach Arne Slot joining Vincent Kompany, Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto de Zerbi, in distancing himself from a potential move there. It has left fans furious at the club's decline while Arsenal take Spurs' place in the Champions League, Brighton leapfrog them into the Europa League and Aston Villa ease past them into the Europa Conference League.

With Harry Kane set to quit the club this summer, the pressure is piling onto Levy's shoulders. But Mason maintained Tottenham remains a club that talented, rising stars of management are keen on.

"There are names out there who are not exactly moving away from it," he said. "They know it's a big club. And they know that if their name is being linked with Tottenham, then it's a massive positive for them.

"It's a big club. We know it is. Every manager, every coach knows this is a big club. Players do, fans do, you can feel it, you can really feel it when you're here when you're in our stadium. So this will stay a big club. And it's going to be attractive for whoever's in charge next season. And I'm sure the players as well."

Spurs won just one of their past seven Premier League matches, drawing one and losing five, including each of the last two. They have also failed to win away from home in the top flight since January.

Mason added on this Sunday's finale away to relegation-threatened Leeds: "For them, there's a lot riding on it. That can work both ways, and we have to use it to our advantage. It's a big pressure situation for them. They have to win. We have to try to manage the game in the best way possible and try to make it suit us. I think we know the type of game we can expect... regardless of the situation, every time you go to Elland Road you have to be ready, so I want the players to be ready."
