Former Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has taken on the role of director of football at Salford City, as confirmed by a source to ESPN. Giggs, who co-owns Salford City alongside his former United teammates Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes, has stepped into this position following his resignation as Wales manager in June 2022.
The 50-year-old football icon faced legal troubles after being charged with the assault of his ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, and her sister. The allegations included controlling or coercive behavior towards Greville between August 2017 and November 2020, as well as physical assaults on both Greville and her sister during an argument at his residence outside Manchester in November 2020. Giggs vehemently denied these accusations and was ultimately cleared of all charges in July 2023 when prosecutors withdrew the case at Manchester Crown Court.
Although Salford City has not officially announced Giggs' appointment, a statement released by the club in February regarding the hiring of Alex Bruce as assistant coach referenced Giggs as the director of football. Currently, Salford City finds itself in a challenging position in League Two, occupying the 20th spot in the standings, just four places above the bottom of the table.
