Ryan Flynn is desperate for St Mirren to finally get a top-six finish under their belt. And the club stalwart believes doing it this season will be even sweeter after some had the Saints as favourites for the drop at the start of the campaign.
Flynn, the current longest-serving player in Paisley, was part of the side that missed out on a top half spot back in 2021 on goal difference alone.
With the chance to make history this season and finally get that monkey off their backs, Flynn is calling on his Buddies to pull together and make sure they get the job done this time around.
Flynn told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “If someone had said to us we would be in this position at this stage at the start of the season we would have taken it.
“I spoke to people at the start of the season and some people wrote us off. After the 4-1 defeat to Aberdeen they said it would be a tough season, but we knew what we had in the squad.
“It was always going to take us some time to get going and that’s what has happened. We are in a good position but we have been here in previous years and not got over the line.
“Missing out on top six by a couple of goals was a huge disappointment. We were so close to achieving our goal and then not to do it was hard to take.
“That year it was our own fault as it was in our own hands. We had games where we had chances to get over the line and we couldn’t do it.
“Sometimes you have to look at yourself and you have to learn from those days.
“We have another chance to finish in the top-six and we have to make sure we take it this year.
“That is the next step for us and it’s one we are determined to take. It is in our own hands now.”
St Mirren are up against a familiar foe tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Tannadice to take on former boss Jim Goodwin’s struggling Dundee United side.
Flynn knows it will be a tough test on the road but is confident the Saints can pick up three points that could send them as high as fourth by the end of the weekend.
He said: “We have to believe in ourselves that we can achieve the top-six and now we have to do our job to achieve it.
“Performances this season have been very good and if we can produce that in the final games then we will get our rewards.
“Although we are sixth, we are not settling for that. We have five massive games before the split. We are looking forward to it and the first one of them is Dundee United.
“It will be a tough game, they have a new manager in Jim and they got a positive result at Livingston.
“We know Jim well and we will be ready for it.”
