A man was camping when he and his dog were approached by a mountain lion that the man quickly killed with a shovel.
The man was at a campground in Fremont County in Colorado last week when he said his dog started growling and barking at an approaching mountain lion, which the man said was "acting extremely aggressive and unusual." He used a shovel to strike and kill the cougar when it got within 10 feet of him, KGW reported.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife told KGW the man called police, and when officers arrived, they found the lion's body on the hood of his vehicle.
The killed mountain lion was a female cat that weighed around 95 pounds when she was killed. She also had an injury on her paw and scratches on her back, according to reporting by KGW.
Wildlife officials stated there have been 25 mountain lion attacks on humans in Colorado since 1990. This incident is not considered an attack, however, because the man was not touched or injured by the lion.
