Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey calls for further action on Russia as she 'stands in solidarity' with Ukraine

Rutherglen's MSP has called for further action to be taken on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine last week.

Clare Haughey also stated that she was standing "in solidarity" with the Ukrainians, as the world reacted to the conflict in Eastern Europe.

The UK Government has already placed sanctions on Russia, in a bid to squeeze the nation financially, however Ms Haughey believes that more could be done.

Hundreds have already been killed in the conflict, which has seen several Ukrainian cities bombed.

Rutherglen MSP Ms Haughey told Lanarkshire Live : “The unprovoked horror which has been brought upon the people of Ukraine by Russian aggression is utterly heart-breaking.

"Men, women and children have been displaced from their homes, injured, or have lost their lives at the hands of Vladimir Putin.

“I stand in solidarity with the people in Ukraine and those who have fled the terror in their home country.

“The sanctions imposed by the UK Government so far are welcome, but there is still more that can be done, for example, by working with the international community in imposing ever-tightening restrictions on Russia and by entirely lifting visa requirements for all Ukrainians seeking entry to UK as other countries are doing."

Ms Haughey also backed the Scottish Government's moves to provide humanitarian aid to the area.

She added: "I also support the initial steps by the Scottish Government to provide £4m in humanitarian aid as well as the provision of essential medical supplies.

"As a society, we must speak out against Putin’s aggression and uphold the values of democracy, sovereignty, territorial integrity and peace."

The comments came as the conflict continued in the Eastern European country, with Russian President Vladimir Putin placing his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

However initial talks have also taken place between both countries on the border between Ukraine and Russian ally Belarus.
