Castlemilk’s Lucas Ewan has been selected to represent Scotland at the GB Tri-Nations Schoolboy Boxing Championships in Dundee next month.
Ewan, 12, who trains at Durie’s Boxing Gym in Rutherglen, goes into the event in the 52kg category, having impressed in trials and assessments at the Boxing Scotland High Performance Centre in Glasgow in recent weeks.
The young fighter has had six bouts to date, winning four of them, and has taken the 50kg Scottish Novice and Western District titles in those.
Delighted club coach Archie Durie said: “Young Lucas gives it 100 per cent in the gym, never takes his foot off the pedal.
“He’s always working hard, and I put his name forward for these GB assessments, knowing just how hard an event these are. I worked with the Scotland team for six years, and I worked many GB events.
“There are some really good, top boys he will come up against, but Lucas has that something special in his attitude to training, and his boxing as a whole.”
Archie now hopes that Lucas can be the latest in a long line of youngsters from the club to succeed at the Championships.
He added: “Our Rutherglen club has had three different boxers win the GBs – Jonlee Joyce won them twice, Vicky Glover won them once with us and Shahzman Parnez won them twice.
“Lucas will attempt to be the fourth Rutherglen boxer to lift the highest domestic honour in amateur boxing, and I really feel that he will be number four.”
