Willie Harvey believes Rutherglen Glencairn should have beat Cumbernauld United on Saturday, but didn’t get the breaks.
Harvey says Glens were denied a penalty, and that United pounced on the one mistake they made during their 1-1 draw in the West of Scotland League Premier Division.
Klark Thomson headed in a Kieran Boubekri cross to give Cumbernauld the lead, with Glens levelling when Jack McIlveen nodded home a Keirin Coleman set-up.
But Harvey felt his side should have taken all three points from Guy’s Meadow.
He said: “I thought we should have won it, I thought we were the better team. Don’t get me wrong, Cumbernauld played well enough, but I thought we created more and were more direct.
“Any time Cumbernauld got the ball I didn’t feel threatened by them in any way.
“The goal that we lost was a drastic error by our own defence; when the ball is going out, make sure it’s going out and follow it out!
“It was just down to a really bad mistake on our part, and in fairness I felt that was the only real opportunity, apart from right at the end when Liam Gormley had a chance at the back post and missed it.
“We had a few chances and I felt that we deserved a penalty that we didn’t get.
“Other than that I was really pleased with the boys, I thought we played really well, worked hard and created a lot of chances.
“If you’re creating a lot of chances, eventually you’ll take them.”
Harvey expects another tough top-flight tussle when Darren Henderson brings his Hurlford United side to the Hamish B. Allan Stadium.
He said: “We drew 1-1 with Hurlford at the start of the season and they beat us 1-0 in a friendly.
“Darren Henderson’s teams are always really well organised, hard to break down, a big, physical, strong team – and I don’t mean kicking, just well organised – strong team.
“It will be a hard game, but it’s one that we can win.”
Harvey hinted that Rutherglen may be about to strengthen their side but was keeping his cards close to his chest.
He said: “We have a few irons in the fire at the minute.
“We’ve identified an area of the park where we think maybe we need to strengthen up a wee bit, so we’re working on that over the next week or two and hopefully we’ll get somebody in.”
