Rutherglen Glencairn gaffer Willie Harvey says securing a last-gasp point with the final kick of the ball at home to Whitletts Victoria on Saturday could prove to be a crucial one in the long run.
The West of Scotland First Division side extended their unbeaten streak to four matches thanks to Anthony Maguire’s equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time.
It ensured Glens climbed to 10th in the table instead of sinking to 13th and Harvey felt it was the least his side deserved after feeling they dominated the game.
He said: “It started to look like being one of those games where we were going to turn around and rue the chances we had, having played so well.
“We are disappointed to drop two points but, at the same time, over the moon to get the point because in the long run it might be a good point for us.
“It meant the difference between dropping two places down the league and jumping up a place up, so it was good to get something out of the game and keep our wee run going.
“But it was no more than we deserved. We actually played really well.
“We want behind to an unfortunate moment. The ball bounced off the Whitletts player to his own team-mate and it left us caught out a wee bit. The boy took it past our defender and scored a decent enough goal, but other than that we totally controlled the game, didn’t look under threat and had loads of chances.”
On the late leveller, he added: “The boys have come back late before and I expect it from them because they know nothing is done until it is done.
“They need to go right to the end but they’ve got to be applauded for getting the late goal.
“The only thing is we need to be winning our games at home if we want to get promoted.
“We have games in hand from three to one over some teams, but I think if we were to win our games and everyone comes to the same level of games, we would be around fourth place, only a couple of points behind the top team.
“We just need to keep racking up the points but we are away from home for the next couple of weeks now on cup duty.”
This Saturday Glens travel to Benburb in the second round of the South Challenge Cup.
Their hosts are on a run of one win in five games but Harvey isn’t taking anything for granted against their league rivals.
He said: “Benburb is always a hard game. They are maybe on a wee run at the moment where they aren’t winning as many games as they should, but they are always tough to beat on their own park.
“It will be a real battle for us on Saturday.”
