Rutherglen Glencairn boss throws down the gauntlet to his side for league surge

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey has told his side to go on a run that can take them right up the West of Scotland League First Division.

Saturday’s 5-1 win over Thorniewood United saw Glens leap over their visitors into 13th place, a point behind Bonnyton Thistle, but with five games in hand.

With only one other game played in their league, that meant Harvey’s side got to play catch-up, and he’s eyeing six points from their next two games at Neilston on Saturday and at home to St Roch’s next Wednesday, knowing full points could take them up to fifth.

But he says too many draws have already hampered Glencairn this season and wants a run of wins.

Harvey said: “We’ve got two league games coming up now before we hit the cup trails again, so ideally if we can get another six points on the table it can put us into a more respectable position.

“If we can get our cup form into the league then we’ll certainly do OK and that was the case on Saturday.

“Too many draws has killed us, and they have been caused by us not taking the chances we’ve made, then being caught by the odd goal towards the end of games and things like that.

“Hopefully we can cut those silly mistakes out and get ourselves climbed up the league.

Harvey says Glencairn are showing a bit of form, having beat Thorniewood 5-1 (RGFC)

“Those six points can put us middle of the league, depending on how a lot of other wee things round about go.”

Harvey added: “It certainly looks a lot better looking above, rather than below.

“We’re pointing at the team above us and saying ‘we need to catch them’ and that’s the way we’ll continue to do it.

“We’ll look at whoever is sitting above us at the time, aim to catch them, and once we’ve leap-frogged them, we’ll aim for the next team.

“We need to go on a good, long run in the league. We know that, and it needs to start right now from Saturday there.

“We’ll certainly do our best to make sure that’s what happens.”

Harvey insists that he’s mystified that Glencairn are 13th in the 16-team league, but knows why.

“We’re unbeaten at home this season, but it would be a lot better if it was wins, rather than draws.

“If we had turned at least half of those draws into wins we’d probably be sitting about fifth or sixth in the league, and that makes a big difference.

“You look at where we are and people are thinking ‘you’re not doing well’ but we’ve only lost three league games all season.

“The draws have crucified us and it has been our own doing – that’s the annoying thing.”
