Rutherglen Glencairn boss says he won't ease up on squad, as there's more to come

Willie Harvey admits his Rutherglen Glencairn squad reckon he’s a moaning-faced boss, but knows he can get more out of them.

Harvey is trying to make sure standards don’t drop after beating Tayport 4-0 in the Scottish Junior Cup third round, as they head into a clash at home to Cumbernauld United in the West of Scotland League First Division.

The Glens gaffer knows his players probably think he was harsh with them for not scoring more than four at Tayport, but says he has no intention of dropping that tactic.

He said: “We keep asking for more from them, simply because we know there’s more to come from them.

“I know people can say you’re being greedy, but you can’t rest on your laurels.

“If you allow them to start thinking they’re the finished article that’s when it all starts to back off.

“You can’t just switch it off willy-nilly, it’s got to be there all the time, and that’s why, as a management team, we are demanding so much of them.

“We did point that out to them after the game at Tayport on Saturday.

“There was a wee bit of talking to, and one of the things we pointed out was that it might seem harsh that we’ve come away from Tayport, we’ve won 4-0, and we’re talking to you not in an angry manner, but a disappointed manner.

“But we’ll stay on their backs constantly, if that’s what it takes.

“If it takes us to be moaning-faced then that’s what we’ll be, to make sure they do what we want them to do.

“We demand so much of them because we know there is so much more to come, and we’ve got to make sure they keep up to those standards.”

Glencairn are preparing for a visit by a Cumbernauld United side bossed by their former coach Tony Fraser.

United sit seventh in the table, three points ahead of 13th-placed Glencairn, who have two games in hand over them.

Harvey said: “We’re at home to Cumbernauld United, their boss is Tony Fraser, who is one of our old coaches.

“We always have good games against one another, they’ve had the upper hand once or twice, we’ve had the upper hand once or twice, and I’m looking forward to that.”

The Scottish Junior Cup fourth round clash at Gartcairn is on Saturday, December 3.
