Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey says his side could have beaten Cumbernauld United 4-1 on Saturday, but admitted draws are killing them.
Harvey was far from pleased with Glencairn’s performance, but says they still created enough chances to win the West of Scotland League First Division clash.
Eva Bembo gave United a third-minute lead at the Hamish B. Allan Stadium, but Jack McIlveen levelled in 14 minutes.
Cumbernauld were reduced to 10 men when Klark Thomson was sent off with five minutes left, but the sides took a point each.
Harvey says United keeper Ryan Kelly made two smart stops and punched a netbound shot over the bar in the last minute.
But he says failing to take those chances is costing Glencairn dearly, with his side now sitting 12th in the 16-team division and nine points off of leaders Gartcairn.
Harvey said: “We were really disappointed in the performance, and too many draws are killing us just now.
“We really need to fix that.
“We didn’t meet the highs of last week, which is really disappointing. We never got out of second gear.
“There wasn’t a great deal between the teams, it was a very mediocre game.
“Although we played poorly we had chances, and more clear-cut chances than Cumbernauld.
“Headers at the back post were headers we scored from last week against Tayport, just this week we didn’t score them.
“We had two strikes on goal that we could have scored, and their goalkeeper has pulled off a tremendous save in the last minute to touch it over the bar.
“We could actually have won the game on Saturday 4-1 or 5-1, not because we were better than Cumbernauld, but because we created the chances.
“But it would have been a bit unfair on Cumbernauld, and I think the draw was probably the right result.
“We could have won it, and we’d have been happy with it, but we wouldn’t have deserved it.
“They didn’t play any better than what we did, but we didn’t play better than them.”
Glens now host Neilston tonight (Wednesday), kick-off 7.30pm.
