Rutherglen Glencairn boss hails 'professional' side as they grab ninth-placed finish

Willie Harvey was delighted as his side ended their West of Scotland First Division campaign in ninth place after a 6-0 win over Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Glens went into their Scottish Junior Cup final against Cumnock on Friday night on a high, as doubles from Ross Smith, Matthew Gear and Ryan McManus fired them up a few positions in the league.

The win ended a run of two 1-0 defeats against Blantyre Vics and Harvey says they went about it the right way.

He said: “The conversation in the dressing room on Saturday was that it had been a very poor league campaign, but they have a big week ahead of them, to go into it as winners, and don’t finish your league campaign, losing your last game at home, and take your total into double figures.

“It worked perfectly – we got a decent result, it moved us up the league and made us look a wee bit more comfortable than it really was, to be honest.

“We were very disappointed with our league campaign, but there were a lot of mitigating circumstances.

“I don’t look for excuses, but if I really wanted to dig I could come up with a lot for this season.”

Harvey was glad players didn’t just treat it like an end-of-season game and stuck to their task.

He said: “We thoroughly deserved the win. I’m not going to bleat or go on about it, because it was a severely depleted Kilbirnie side, but at the end of the day we still went about our business.

“Killbirnie made it hard for us in the first half, but in the second half we just over-ran them.

“ 6-0 result wasn’t flattering by any means, because it could have been more, and the boys did it properly.

“It would have been easy for it to be an end-of-season game, because players could have gone into it thinking they have a chance of playing on Friday night and maybe thinking of protecting themselves.

“As I keep telling players, when you try to protect yourself that’s when most damage gets done – maybe not going into a tackle as well as they should, and all of a sudden ending up with an ankle or knee injury.

“In fairness, the reaction we got on Saturday was everything we wanted.

“We’re happy with ninth place, and next season is just around the corner – it starts in the last week of July.”
