Rutherglen fire: Flats evacuated as seven crews rush to blaze tearing through building

Fire crews remain at the scene of a blaze that has torn through a Rutherglen building during the night.

The blaze was called in just after 11pm on Thursday evening, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue service working through the night to tackle the inferno on King Street with seven appliances at the scene as well as two aerial appliances. Nearby flats have also been evacuated as a safety precaution.

Glasgow Live have been told that the building on fire is allegedly the Royal Burgh House, with one witness claiming that the 'roof of the building has collapsed in'. Pictures circulating on social media show the building engulfed in flames, with both the fire and resulting smoke seen from far away.

Lanarkshire Police are also at the scene, with the force sharing the incident on social media and confirming that King Street has been closed in both directions and Farmeloan Road has also been closed to the junction with Alleysbank Road.

The force said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a fire on King Street, Rutherglen, following a report around 11.30pm on Thursday, 13 October, 2022. King Street is currently closed in both directions and Farmeloan Road is also closed to the junction with Alleysbank Road."

Locals have been advised by the fire service to keep windows and doors closed due to the extent of smoke in the area.
