Russian Special Services Blamed For Attack On Anti-Corruption Activist

Prominent anti-corruption blogger and opposition leader Navalny walks in central Moscow

Lithuanian officials have recently attributed the blame for a recent attack to Russia, suggesting the involvement of Russian special services. The attack targeted Leonid Volkov, the former chief of staff of Alexei's anti-corruption foundation. According to the officials, the incident bears the hallmark of Russian intelligence services, indicating a possible recruitment of an individual to carry out the assault.

One Lithuanian official described the attack as an act of political terrorism, unprecedented in the country, and highlighted its professional execution, hinting at the involvement of special services. The United States has also expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the threats faced by individuals in Russian civil society who oppose the Kremlin.

While the Kremlin declined to comment on the matter, citing the incident's occurrence in Lithuania, Leonid Volkov, the victim of the attack, expressed gratitude for surviving the assault. Despite sustaining injuries, including a broken arm and severe bruises, Volkov remains resolute in continuing his political activities, along with the Anti-Corruption Foundation.
