Russian Plague Lab Researcher Dies After Reportedly Breaking Test Tube as Nearly 200 People Are Monitored

A laboratory technician at an anti-plague research institute in Siberia has died after developing pneumonia of unknown cause, while Russian media reported that 197 people who may have had contact with her were identified and 189 were hospitalised for observation.

The regional publication Lyudi Baikala reported that Daria Shipilova, an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, told medical staff that she had broken a test tube containing Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague, on 25 September.
