Tragedy struck Kyiv, Ukraine, as a fresh Russian missile barrage on Friday morning resulted in one person killed and 11 others injured. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the death and provided updates on the injured individuals, with five hospitalized and the rest receiving treatment at the scene.
Ukraine's Air Force Command reported that Russia launched five ballistic missiles towards Kyiv at approximately 7 a.m. on Friday. Fortunately, Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted all five missiles. Despite this, falling debris caused damage and injuries in the city center, with reports of fires and structural damage in various districts.
According to Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, one district experienced damage to an office building, road surface, and gas pipe, with five cars catching fire. In another district, a fire broke out at a construction site. Debris fell in multiple districts, including Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Dniprovskyi, resulting in fires on building roofs and burning vehicles.
Popko highlighted that the heating network in the Holosiivskyi district was also damaged, prompting emergency services to respond across affected areas. Russia's defense ministry claimed the missile strike was in retaliation for a Ukrainian attack on a chemical plant in Russia's Rostov region earlier in the week, allegedly carried out using American-made ATACMS missiles.
The ministry stated that the strike targeted Ukrainian military installations, including the SBU command post, the Kyiv Luch design bureau, responsible for Neptune missile systems and Olkha ground-based cruise missiles, and positions of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system. The Russian Ministry of Defense asserted that all intended targets were hit successfully in the strike.
