A Russian cyber gang is believed to be responsible for a recent ransomware attack that disrupted operations at several London hospitals, leading to the cancellation of appointments and procedures. The attack targeted Synnovis, a provider of pathology lab services for hospitals under the National Health Service (NHS).

Former chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, Ciaran Martin, identified the group known as Qilin as the likely perpetrator behind the attack. Martin described the incident as one of the more serious ransomware attacks in the U.K., as it completely disabled essential operations.

The affected hospitals included King’s College, Guy’s, and St Thomas’, which are part of the NHS network in south London. The disruption extended to clinics and doctors’ practices across the city, with a significant impact on services such as blood transfusions.

Following the attack, procedures and operations had to be either canceled or redirected to alternative facilities, causing a major disruption in healthcare services. The incident was promptly reported to the authorities, and investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the damage.

Ransomware attacks involve cybercriminals using malware to paralyze computer systems and then demanding payment in exchange for restoring access. This form of cybercrime is known to be highly disruptive and costly, affecting various sectors including local governments, hospitals, schools, and businesses.

Synnovis, the company targeted in this attack, is still working to understand the full scope of the incident. The group behind the attack, Qilin, also known as Agenda, operates on dark web forums and provides malware to affiliates for conducting ransomware attacks in exchange for a share of the ransom payments. According to threat intelligence experts, Qilin has targeted over 100 victims in its operations.

This incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by cybercriminals, particularly in the healthcare sector. Efforts to enhance cybersecurity measures and collaboration between organizations and law enforcement agencies are crucial in mitigating such attacks and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
