Russia, Venezuela and Trump’s oil push: the EU's awkward G20 energy summit

European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen will join this week’s G20 energy meeting in Houston, Texas, alongside unexpected Russian and Venezuelan officials, exposing an increasingly uncomfortable rift between Brussels and Washington over what energy security actually means — and who should be responsible for delivering it.

The G20 energy ministerial meeting, hosted by the US administration from 14–16 September under the banner of “energy abundance,” reflects Washington’s push for a model centered on expanding oil and gas production, increasing electricity supply and rolling back environmental regulations viewed as obstacles to energy investment.
