Russia plans to impose Moscow time zone on annexed Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia

Russia says it will impose Moscow's time zone on four occupied areas of Ukraine.

The move will affect Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, four territories annexed by Russia in October last year.

If the new law is approved, residents in all four territories will have to put their clocks forward an hour, having previously observed Eastern European Standard Time, the same as Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Russia's ministry of industry and trade made the announcement on its official Telegram account.

"Step-by-step synchronisation of Russia's legislation continues after four new constituent entities are admitted to its composition," they wrote, in a post translated to English from Russian.

They added a draft federal law had already been submitted to the government.

In late October, Vladimir Putin declared martial law in the four territories, telling a Security Council meeting he was working to "solve very difficult, large-scale tasks to ensure Russia's security and safe future".

Moscow has previously told teachers in occupied territories to switch to the Russian school curriculum and taken other steps to integrate the regions into Russian infrastructure.

Mr Putin has labelled integration an "urgent task", which needs to be achieved "as quickly and thoroughly as possible".

"It is clear that those people … need to, as they say, take root in the Russian reality," he said during a meeting with young scientists in December 2022.

"And Russia needs most of all to gain a solid foothold there.

"This means more than attaining our military and political objectives there.

"It means working in those territories and with those people so that the people feel the benefit of the accession to Russia."
