The World Health Organization has issued an initial risk assessment following the death of a laboratory worker in Russia's Irkutsk region, where suspected plague reports prompted quarantine and medical monitoring. It assessed the risk as moderate to low for Irkutsk, low for Russia and very low for the WHO European Region.
The 28-year-old woman, identified in Russian media as Darya Shipilova, died on 2 October at a hospital in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk. Russian authorities describe her illness as pneumonia of unknown cause and have told WHO that no plague was recorded in her or anyone else. The assessment remains preliminary, and the agency is seeking further information.
