A Western official has confirmed that Russia launched a ballistic missile as part of an attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro. However, the missile was clarified not to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
The official, speaking at a summit of Asian nations’ defense ministers in Laos, stated that the specific type of ballistic missile used is still under assessment due to ongoing evaluation of its impact.
There is a discrepancy between the Western official's characterization of the missile and the description provided by the Ukrainian military. The reason for this inconsistency has not been immediately clarified.
If the missile had been an ICBM, it would have signified a significant escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. ICBMs have a much longer range compared to other types of ballistic missiles, indicating the potential use of a new type of missile by Russia in the ongoing conflict.
