‘I saw a red dot’: The opponents of Russia facing death threats across Europe

Russian activist Vladimir Osechkin lives under constant police protection, a necessity since 2022 after French officials said Russia was attempting to assassinate him.

Even simple errands like taking his children to school or visiting the supermarket require a police escort. The gravity of this threat was underscored in April 2025, when a group of Russian men reportedly staked out Osechkin's home in southwestern France for several hours, capturing videos and photos in what court documents suggest was groundwork for an assassination. Years prior, Osechkin recalled seeing a red dot, which he believed to be a laser sight for a gun, appear on his wall.
