Russia has reportedly supplied North Korea with over a million barrels of oil since March, according to analysis conducted by a UK-based non-profit organization. The analysis, based on hundreds of satellite images spanning an eight-month period, revealed multiple instances of North Korean tankers traveling between the Russian port of Vostochny and facilities in North Korea, making over 40 trips in total.
The first documented oil transfer occurred on March 7, following reports that North Korea was assisting Russia in its conflict in Ukraine. These oil deliveries are in violation of UN sanctions that prohibit large-scale petroleum transfers to North Korea.
This development sheds light on the deepening relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, with North Korean soldiers reportedly joining Russian forces in combat. Approximately 11,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia's Kursk region, where a significant Russian military presence has been observed.
Recent reports suggest that Russia has assembled a substantial force, numbering in the tens of thousands, poised for a potential assault on Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region. In addition to military support, North Korea has been aiding Russia by supplying weapons and ammunition for the conflict in Ukraine.
