Swansea City are in the process of identifying potential transfer targets to replace Ryan Manning after conceding the Irishman will leave the club in the summer.
Manning has been a mainstay under the current coaching staff but is now in the final year of his contract at the club.
The Republic of Ireland international was offered fresh terms by the Swans earlier this season, although the 26-year-old rejected the new deal.
And Russell Martin says the Swans must avoid allowing players to enter the final 12 months of their contracts in future.
“I love Ryan, he loves it here, but we’ve allowed the contract to go to the last year, or not address it properly in the summer, so we’re at where we’re at,” he said.
“I don’t think there’s any point in keeping talking about that. He’s not going to sign a contract here.
“He’s given us everything he’s got, which is all we can ask for. He’s got the right to go and see what’s out there for him in the summer.
“We’re exploring other options for that for next season already. It’s what we have to do, we have to be ready. It’ll be a real shame.
“The reality is now, you get past January and people think he may leave in January and you readdress the situation, but I don’t think anything’s changed from his end or his agent’s end.
“We have to avoid that in the future. It is what it is really.”
It comes after Martin admitted clarity was needed regarding his own contract situation ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking ahead of the defeat to Blackburn Rovers, the head coach commented: “I think it would help to have more clarity and certainty in terms of recruitment ahead of the summer, but, again, it’s not my job to give myself a new contract so we won’t stress about it.”
He went on to add: “Would I like that to get sorted at some point? Of course. I think we all would. Would it help the club to move forward and carry on doing what we’re doing and improve what we’re doing? Yeah I think it would. But it’s not up to me. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Manning has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Swansea so far this season, scoring three goals while also registering five assists.
The versatile left wing-back - who has won six caps for his country - joined the club from Queens Park Rangers in October 2020.
