Russell Crowe pens heartfelt tribute to close pal Shane Warne after cricketer's death

Actor Russell Crowe has remembered his friend, Shane Warne, following the sporting star's unexpected death.

Australian cricketer Shane was found dead in his villa in Koh Samui, on Friday, having suffered a suspected heart attack.

Warne had been enjoying a luxury Thai holiday with friends when he passed away aged 52.

And on Monday, Russell, 57, took to Twitter to share a snap of himself and Shane dining at the Crown in Melbourne with friends.

The capture showed the two stars surrounded by pals - including singer Amy Shark - as they all beamed for a group capture.

"Gold medallists, billionaires, fastest gun in the world. Oscars. Amy when she was a baby shark," Robin Hood star Russell wrote on the micro-blogging site.

He finished the tribute: "Our last Crown dinner. Lots of love Shane."

Shane previously said that he wanted Russell to portray him if Hollywood went ahead with making a movie about his 2008 Indian Premier League season.

"He’s [Crowe] such a quality actor, has done a lot of different roles,' he told The Herald Sun at the time.

"Chris Hemsworth is killing it and he’s an Aussie from Victoria too. I think we should have Margot Robbie too. We could have the All-Australian affair."

It comes after Shane's former flame, Liz Hurley, took to social media to share her devastation at losing the athlete.

Speaking of her sorrow, she typed on Instagram : "I feel like the sun has gone behind a cloud forever. RIP my beloved Lionheart."

The actress and model - who was in a relationship with Shane from 2010-2013 and engaged to the cricket sensation before their split - also shared a string of photos from her three-year romance with Shane, showing the couple in happier times.

Following his death, Shane's body was the subject of an autopsy - which confirmed he died of natural causes - in Thailand, it is now understood that he will now be flown back to Australia where his family have accepted the offer of a state funeral.

Royal Thai Police chief General Surachate Hakparn confirmed on Monday there was "no foul play", and "no sign of fighting or theft" in the cricketer's luxury hotel room - with pathologists concluding he died of natural causes.

"The lawyer and embassy are coordinating to take the body back to Australia," he added.
