Runners raring to go in Thornhill 10k to raise funds in memory of tragic farmer

Thornhill will once again host the village’s own 10k race again in May following a successful edition last year.

The event, organised by Tay Fitness Events, saw last year’s edition attract 682 runners and helped raise more than £7,500 for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

The ‘Thornhill 10k – Round The Frews’ race was created in honour of local dairy farmer, Steven Black, who tragically died in 2020 following a short battle with duodenal cancer – a rare and fast-growing cancer in the small intestine.

The race organisers are hoping that this year’s edition of the race can raise more cash towards the charity.

Steven’s lifelong friend, Neil MacLaren, a former police officer, started a challenge over the course of one year, where he ran 10k every day to fundraise for Beatson Cancer Charity.

Neil completed his amazing challenge in April 2021 and raised over £10,000.

Following Neil’s success, Steven and Neil’s families teamed up with Tay Fitness Events to make the Thornhill 10k a reality.

The route is identical to the one which Neil plotted his way along in 2021 and there will also be a separate 2.5k race taking place on the same day.

This year’s race is set for Sunday, May 7.

Entry to the race is £8 – with £2 from each entry going directly to the charity and there will be collections on the day.

Those who can’t take part on the day can take part virtually and receive a medal in the post and still support the charity.

A Tay Fitness Events spokesperson said: “We’re excited to be returning to Thornhill again in 2023 to continue raising money for Beatson. We are very thankful that the Thornhill community welcomed Tay Fitness Events into the village and gave us a platform to support the Black family in their aim of raising awareness of duodenal cancer.

“Whether you are new to running or looking to set a PB, the Thornhill 10k and 2.5k will not disappoint. The lunch and home baking available afterwards makes all the hard work worth it.”

Anyone wishing to take part in either the 10k or 2.5k can sign up at tayfitness.com.

Everyone taking part is encouraged to create a JustGiving page to fundraise for Beatson Cancer Charity.

Maisie McCormick, Beatson community fundraising manager, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been chosen to benefit once more from this fantastic event. Last year’s first ever Thornhill 10k far exceeded any of our expectations and it’s just wonderful that it is going ahead again in 2023.

“It’s lovely to see the whole Thornhill community get involved in remembering their friend Steven.”
