Rumored Samsung Wide Fold pops up in early One UI 9 builds

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 shown in hand.

Samsung has been tipped to be developing a fourth foldable phone meant to be a direct competitor with the much-rumored iPhone Fold. This Wide Galaxy Z Fold would be more square than the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 and wider overall.

This week, we might have gotten a first glance at how that new phone could look. Early test builds of One UI 9 were spotted in the wild (spotted by Android Authority), and it appears to have a potential first look at a wide foldable phone with the codename of H8 hidden within the build.

The early test builds of One UI 9 have several animations with H8 in the filename, including both dark and light versions of a pictorial possibly showing off this wide, foldable display. It's not much bu there's a first look at the device:

Now, this is not a leaked render or CAD drawing of the device. It also doesn't show off any features beyond a centered front-facing camera for the closed version of the phone, and centered in the right side of the open display. But it does seemingly show that Samsung appears to be developing something for this new format.

The leak does suggest that the Wide Fold might debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, which should release later this summer.

In the last few years, Samsung has released its foldable lineup in July, and we expect a similar window this year. Android Authority reported that One UI 9 could be released with the foldable phones, including this more square format, which would likely feature a 4:3 aspect ratio. Apple reportedly wants to use that ratio to have the iPhone Fold mimic the iPad.

Meanwhile, One UI 8.5 is supposed to launch out of the box with the Galaxy S26 series that will debut at the end of February.
