Rugby club hit out in row over sports pitches at South Ayrshire Council's new £60m Maybole school

A thriving rugby club claims it is being booted into touch by a lack of planning from South Ayrshire Council.

Maybole sporting chiefs are livid at the layout of astro pitches on the town's brand new Community Campus.

The stunning £60 million new build will replace Carrick Academy, Cairn, Gardenrose and St. Cuthbert's primary schools and also house an early years facility.

A total of 1,370 pupils could be housed within the new campus which is set to open later this year.

But a row has broken out over the lack of provision for rugby pitches built as part of the new setup.

Bosses at Carrick Rugby Club insist they were initially promised two all weather surfaces when consulted on the campus design.

But as part of cost-cutting measures, council chiefs have produced only one rugby pitch, with a second pitch to be handed over to football.

That, say the rugby club, will lead to them being "driven out of town" with some games being played as far away as Girvan or Ayr.

A club spokesman told Ayrshire Live: "We were consulted early in the process and made clear our need to have two pitches due to the size of our membership and our number of teams.

"On any given Saturday we have three games and up to 100 kids of all ages are part of our setup.

"We're the only youth sporting team in the town and should be getting supported to flourish but this is the opposite message from the council.

"We were told that two pitches would be fine and now the goalposts have - quite literally - been changed."

The spokesman added: "We do a lot of diversionary work in the town and try to keep kids active and off the streets by playing rugby.

"It becomes harder to keep them involved if they're being sent out of town and it's really disappointing that the council have gone back on their word here."

Council insiders claim the cost of an extra rugby pitch would have drained an extra £700,000 from the public purse, leaving them little option but to kick for touch.

A council spokesperson said: “To minimise cost increases due to inflation, engineering requirements and ground conditions, the council decided at Cabinet that the second all weather pitch at Maybole Community Campus will be for football only.

"We will continue to work with local sporting clubs, individuals and groups to make sure pitches on the campus are accessible for all.”
