RTE weather presenter Joanna Donnelly gets tattoo on stomach with special meaning

RTE weather presenter Joanna Donnelly has gotten a tattoo in tribute to her teenage daughter.

The Met Eireann forecaster got the tattoo on her stomach and it also has a connection to the weather.

Joanne shares three children with her fellow meteorologist husband, Nicci, 18, Tobias, 14 and Casper 12.

Her tattoo of a lightning bolt was inspired by her daughter Nicci. Joanna said: “My daughter, Nicci, was going through that difficult period in a woman’s life when your body is changing, and I wanted her to know that your body is wonderful.

“I have a stretch mark on my body from giving birth, a jagged streak that looks like a lightning bolt.

“To me, that mark says I was privileged to be able to carry a child, one of the most powerful things you can do as a woman.

“The tattoo artist thought I wanted to cover up my stretch mark, but I wanted to show it off.”

The RTE presenter added: "If I ever published a memoir, the title would be ‘Thunderstorm’."

It comes as Joanna Donnelly also opened up about the sad death of her mother, Marie, who passed away after minor surgery last September.

“I wasn’t ready for mum to go,” she told RTE Guide.

"She was fit and healthy and a huge part of my life.

"It's like a piece of me is missing. I'm still waiting for Mum to walk in the door."

The presenter, who also lost her dad Frank when she was just three years old and her brother William just before he turned 34, told how she has been trying to work through her grief.

She explained: "When I need to get new clothes for TV I'm thinking 'what's the point?'

"I have to force myself to buy stuff and when I look at myself in the mirror I wonder if she would like it.

"Mum was a part of me and it's impossibly sad at times.

"But she's in my head all the time. Every time a flower blooms in my garden I say: 'Look at that, Mum!'"

Joanna, who has been candid about her struggles with infertility in the past, went on: "The greatest gift my mother gave me was bringing me into this world.

"She was the first person to feel my heartbeat and I was privileged to be the last person to feel hers."
