RTE viewers 'so sad' as broadcaster calls time on popular TV show after 21 years

RTE viewers are paying tribute to a ‘wonderful’ show as the nation broadcaster calls time on it after 21 years on the air.

Eco Eye, the programme that looked into critical environmental issues impacting Ireland and abroad on RTE One will have its final episode aired tonight.

The show, which is produced by Earth Horizon Productions, has highlighted many ‘vital’ environmental and sustainability issues in Ireland and it looks as thought viewers are going to miss its presence on the TV schedule.

The show was presented by Duncan Stewart and in recent years he was joined by ecologist Anja Murray, clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu, and immunologist Dr Lara Dungan.

The episodes explored a number of environmental issues like climate change, the circular economy, biodiversity, and more.

It is understood that Eco Eye will be replaced by a new series which will be announced later in the year.

RTE's director of content, Jim Jennings spoke about the end of the show and said Mr Stewart was "a guiding light on climate and sustainability for the past 21 years”.

He said the show played an essential role in bringing the public information on topics that affect our everyday lives, before adding: "[Mr Stewart] has been a tireless advocate and educator on climate and sustainability issues and we are extremely grateful to him for sharing his expert knowledge and enthusiasm with our audiences for the past 21 years.

"We look forward to building on this legacy as we continue to expand our climate coverage working with Earth Horizon and other production companies on a wide range of forthcoming series".

Another said: “I'm so sad to hear that the wonderful @EcoEye is ending tonight, and feel extra privileged to appear in tonight's show on water quality.

“Congrats to all the Ecoeye team for making some of the best Irish TV for decades- you'll be missed!”

Dr Cara Augustenborg, Member of Ireland's Climate Change Advisory Council, also paid tribute to the show online, writing: “Saddened to hear the end of @EcoEye on @rte after 21 years.

“That team has done more to raise environmental awareness in Ireland than anything else on offer & were always fun to work with. Well done #DuncanStewart @Marcusdstewart Killian McLoughlin et al".

The final episode of the Eco Eye will air on RTE One tonight at 8pm.
