RTE viewers loved Paul McGrath and Jack Charlton's son John's appearance on the Late Late Show

TV viewers were moved by RTE's tribute to Jack Charlton on Friday night's Late Late Show.

The chat show, hosted by Ryan Tubridy, celebrated all things Irish football to mark 100 years of the FAI.

The show kicked off with an interview with President Michael D Higgins who, amongst other topics, discussed his love of football and in particular the League of Ireland with Tubridy, reports RSVP Live.

Tubs was then joined by Ireland legends Niall Quinn, Shay Given, David O'Leary and Packie Bonner to share their memories of the glory days of Irish football.

Next, managers Stephen Kenny and Vera Pauw talked about how the Ireland teams are currently performing, alongside players Gavin Bazunu, Dara O'Shea, Jessie Stapleton and Chloe Mustaki.

But the high point of the night for many viewers was Ryan's interview with John Charlton.

John, the son of Italia 90 hero Jack Charlton, paid a touching tribute to his father and talked not only all about his incredible career and legacy, but what life was like growing up with him as well.

Fan favourite and national treasure Paul McGrath then made an appearance to present John with a book of condolences which was signed by hundreds of thousands members of the Irish public following his sad death in 2020.

John was visibly emotional as he flicked through the book, as Paul told Ryan all about his close bond and friendship during his years playing for Ireland.

Late Late viewers loved the moment, and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

"Jack Charlton passed away, and unlike so many other legends, we only heard good stories. No scandal, nothing to sully his memory. He was so special," one viewer wrote.

"Great times and brilliant memories and more importantly Jack was a very likeable person," a second added.

A third commented: "Paul McGrath looks like he'd still do a job for us. What a legend."

While a fourth said: "What a lovely gesture!"

"Really, really good show tonight," a fifth remarked.
