RTE viewers left in tears after 'powerful' interview with Alanna Quinn Idris on Late Late Show

Late Late Show viewers were moved to tears by a powerful interview with a "brave young woman" who was left blind in one eye following a violent attack when she was a teenager.

Alanna Quinn Idris spoke to Ryan Tubridy about the impact that going blind in one eye had on her hopes and dreams for life.

The brave Dublin woman spoke about a number of surgeries she has had, how the attack stopped her enjoying a new stage of her life as well as her loving relationship with her boyfriend and her plans to go to Thailand.

Speaking on the show, she said: "I remember being in the hospital and my dad was there in the room with me. We had a male nurse looking at me. I remember he just started sobbing."

The nurse told Alanna that he had a daughter the same age. "That's when I realised this is bad," she told Ryan.

She recalled the first time she saw herself in the mirror after the attack in 2021, when she was just 17-years-old.

"I just broke down entirely, it was my first time seeing the eye itself," she revealed.

Despite the horrific nature of her injuries, viewers were in awe of Alanna's bravery and courage, as well as her positive attitude towards life in the face of such adversity.

One viewer wrote: "Alanna Quinn what a powerful interview from a brave young woman sharing how she’s tried her best to survive such a trauma."

Another said they were "so happy" to see her smiling on the Late Late show and described her as a "beautiful soul."

Alanna spoke of her initial dream of going to Thailand to volunteer with elephants before the attack.

Despite her injuries and an upcoming surgery this month, she still hopes to realise those dreams.

"I'd love to see a gofundme to get Alanna to Thailand to work with elephants. She's amazing. The very best of us," one viewer wrote on Twitter after the interview.

Viewers continued to row in with support for Alanna. One Twitter user said: "So sad what happened to Alanna in a way it's now her superpower strength her survival and story and the whole country is behind her."

One final tribute to her "powerful" interview on the Late Late said: "It's so hard to imagine anyone wanting to cause Alanna Quinn Idris any harm. She seems wonderful and has such a light around her. She's faced such horror with so much grace and honesty. In awe, I don't think I could do the same."
