RTE viewers were left "cringing" with embarrassment after Tommy Tiernan asked Amy Huberman a deeply personal question.
The actress and writer, 42, who is married to former Irish rugby player Brian O'Driscoll, appeared as a guest on the show on Saturday night.
Speaking to Tommy, Amy described her life as a working mother-of-three, her Jewish ancestry and family connection to the holocaust, as well as how her Brian's disciplined life in his sporting career gave her life more structure.
However, the interview took an extremely awkward turn when Tommy changed the subject, saying: "I wonder if we can talk about sex?"
Tommy went on to ask Amy how her relationship with "physical intimacy" had changed from her 20s to her 40s, through marriage and motherhood.
After an awkward pause, Tommy jumped in, saying: "If it's an unfair question Amy, we can leave it."
Amy agreed to answer and went on to discuss how important human touch was and how important it is to hug your loved ones.
But the line of questioning struck a nerve with people watching at home as they took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the interview.
One woman wrote: "I love the #TommyTiernanShow, I really do. But *what* is this question? Feels unfair."
Another agreed, saying: "Where did the shift in this conversation come from? Awk-werd. I'm cringing!"
A third commented: "Well, that was a bit of a bizarre interview with Amy Huberman the way Tommy took it."
Some people even wondered if Tommy would have asked the same question to Amy's husband if he was on the show.
They wrote: "Is Tommy Tiernan for real - would he have asked a male interviewee the same question about sexual intimacy? Tell him to do one @amyhuberman"
But one person on Twitter defended the question saying it was Tommy's job as an interviewer, writing: "The beauty of Tommy Tiernan, is that he’ll ask questions others wouldn’t dream of asking. And invariably, he’ll get a response."
