RTE Tommy Tiernan viewers praise Dublin podcaster Sophie White for 'honest' chat about mental health

RTE viewers have praised Dublin writer and podcaster Sophie White for her "honest" chat with Tommy Tiernan on Saturday night’s show about her struggles with mental health.

During the show, the pair chatted about how they both have written columns for the Sunday Independent, before talking about Sophie' first ever book. She explained: "My first book was called Recipies For A Nervous Breakdown and it was a cookbook slash memoir, and it was about a nervous breakdown I had when I was 22.

“I was going along doing the normal things. I would have considered myself to be a respectable drug taker. I wouldn’t have thought I had engaged in risky behaviour or anything," said Sophie.

She explained Tommy how one night she took a pill at Electric Picnic in 2007 and that at the time it turned her life into a "nightmare". Sophie said: " I can pretty much say I have never been the same it's almost like my life leading up to that age at 22 just fell off a cliff and I have never been that person I was ever again I was ever again.”

Sophie described how for several months she lived through a nightmare as her mental health suffered, and that she finally got help from a psychiatrist to help her get back on track. She said: "Sometimes people hear depression and they think sad when so much of mental illness is terror. The terror that this will never go away, the terror I will never feel normal.

“It was when I started to plan my suicide that I finally said I need to give this one last shot and go to the psychiatrist," she added. Viewers flocked to social media to commend Sophie for her "honest and amazing" interview on the show.

One person commented: "Wow Sophie White. Amazing and honest. Thank you for sharing your story.”

A second said: " “Sophie white amazing woman.” A third added: "Sophie White articulately adding to the normalisation of discussion around mental health conditions and issues. Raw and unvarnished. Big kudos to her."
