RTE stars Ryan Tubridy and Maura Derrane share snaps as they enjoy holidays away from the camera

RTE stars have taken a well deserved break away after their shows finished up for the season.

Ryan Tubridy set off on his long awaited trip to Iceland during his break from radio and TV this week.

The broadcaster wrapped up the final Late Late Show episode of the season just over a week ago, with a 60 year special to celebrate the long running programmes achievement.

Ryan has been missing from his usual 9am slot on RTE Radio 1 for the past week as he headed to the airport to catch a flight to scenic Iceland.

The RTE star made the most of his trip and even took the opportunity to meet one of his favouirte authors authors, Ragnar Jónasson while he was in town.

Posting a picture with the presenter to his Instagram Jónasson said: “Great to meet Ryan Tubridy in Iceland - he’ll be back for @icelandnoir.”

Speaking before he wrapped up TV for the season, Tubridy said: "I'm looking forward to taking a breather.

“I think it's really good to get away from people in terms of listeners and viewers, just to give them a break from you because it's healthy.”

Lifting the lid on his plans, the 48-year-old father-of-two added: "So, I will drift off and I will go to the West of Ireland, and I might travel further afield as well because I've always wanted to visit Iceland.

“In the last couple of years, I've read everything to do with Icelandic, you know, noir thrillers, and I've become a little obsessed,” the self confessed book nerd went on.

"So, I want to go over. I won’t sample their cuisine, which is fermented shark and pickled herrings and stuff like that. But I will chance a beer or two.

"I'm going to go to Iceland for sure and maybe one or two other places. Look it's post-pandemic, I'm ready to rock and roll."

Maura Derrane is also making the most of her time away from TV this summer.

The Today Show presenter opted for a staycation in Donegal to wind down.

Maura was joined by her mother around the Lough Eske area, near Donegal town in the south of the region.

The pair are living it up in the world famous Harvey's Point hotel, run by television personality and fashion expert Noel Cunningham.

Maura gave her fans a glimpse at her holiday by sharing a video of her incredible room. The spacious suite includes two double beds, twin sinks and a gorgeous bathroom.

She also showed off the stunning views surrounding the property.

"I finally made it to the fabulous Harvey's Point”, she wrote on her Instagram account. "I will be very happy here with my mom for the next few nights. Thanks to Noel Cunningham for making it happen."

After the end of The Today Show's season last month, Maura said she would have loved to maintain the same schedule on the afternoon show, but felt stepping back and working three days a week was necessary.

“I think women, when you have kids, you kind of lose yourself. You have to work a bit harder at it,” she told the Sunday Independent.

“You forget about yourself, you lose yourself, and I’m guilty of losing myself. I have lost a bit of myself. Only for my work, I think I’d go crazy. I’m very complete in my work, but I’ve lost myself a little bit along the way there”.
