Ryan Tubridy wished the brave girl who inspired the Toy Show Appeal well as she underwent major surgery for cancer yesterday.
Saoirse Ruane was first diagnosed with osteosarcoma in December 2019 and had her right leg amputated as Ireland entered lockdown in March 2020.
Saoirse, 10, from Kiltullagh, Galway, captured the hearts of the nation on The Late Late Toy Show in 2020 when she spoke about losing her limb to the rare illness.
Saoirse was diagnosed with cancer for a second time last month and underwent surgery on her lung yesterday.
Posting on Instagram her mum Roseanna said: “We ask you to please keep Saoirse in your hearts as we go forward now and take this first step in a long road to keep her where she truly belongs… here with us.” RTE presenter Ryan wished Saoirse well ahead of her surgery.
He said: “She has a big day. Let’s fill those sails with hope and love.”
He gave Saoirse a gift of a guitar when she appeared on The Late Late Show last week and encouraged her to keep her positive attitude.
