The 72-year-old was cheered on by friends and family when he reached the top of the summit today.

Ryan Tubridy documented the "powerful" climb for those that were not able to make it.

The host thanked the public for coming together and creating something so special.

He said: "It has been amazing. It's been powerful. It's been emotional. It's been difficult.

"That was not an easy climb but thank you Charlie.

"We got to the top of Croagh Patrick. We're thinking of our friends in Ukraine. We're thinking about the great Irish people and of course Charlie Bird, Vicky Phelan.

"This is what it's all about. Thanks to everybody I've met coming up the mountain today.

"Thanks to everybody who has been donating.

"It's crossed the one million euro threshold for Pieta and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

"This is Ireland at its best."
